IF I KNEW THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW

by Sophie Childs, author of Behind the Scenes

If I knew then what I know now…

I wouldn’t have spent 8 years living with someone I didn’t love. It wasn’t that he was a bad person, he just wasn’t the right person for me and I was miserable. Yet a lack of self-confidence and a worry about money meant that it took me a long time to work up the courage to leave.

How different my twenties would have been if I’d just taken that leap of faith into the great unknown sooner. I could have rented a room in a shared house, lived my life the way that I wanted to and not be tied into a suburban lifestyle that really wasn’t me.

If I knew then what I know now…

I wouldn’t have spent 5 years working in offices. I had no idea that there was money to be made in freelance writing, good money. I thought that the only way you could have a career as a writer was if you wrote novels and with bills to pay, I foolishly thought that office work was the only way I could keep a roof over my head.

What fun I could have had if I’d realised that the world of a freelance writer is much more interesting and varied than I could ever have imagined. I could have travelled the world, writing about my experiences, combining ghost writing novels with blogging and providing web copy to businesses, funding a lifestyle that contained a million and one adventures.

If I knew then what I know now…

I would have waited a little longer before starting a family with my husband. The moment I met him, I knew that I’d found the man I was meant to marry and have babies with. Both Virgos, we had a plan. We were going to go on holiday, first for a week, then for a fortnight, and if that went well, move in together. If we were happy living under the same roof, we’d get engaged, then married, maybe starting to try for a family once we were engaged, not caring if there was a baby bump in the wedding photos.

The best laid plans lasted as long as the first holiday. We figured that it would take us at least 6 months to fall pregnant, so we started trying for a baby soon after we met. We’d been dating a mere 4 months when that little blue line appeared and our oldest son was on his way, to be followed by 3 sisters and a brother over the next 7 years.

But then… but then…

If I hadn’t made the decisions I had, I wouldn’t have lived my life. The life that made me who I am. The life that has given me 5 gorgeous children and a husband I adore. The life that has inspired a novel or two and given me endless material to write about for my clients. Much of my freelance work has come out of my parenting experiences and without my children, my career would have taken a very different path.

I look back and think that if I knew then what I know now, maybe I wouldn’t have made decisions that were so very different. I have the life I always dreamed of as a child and even though I might have taken the scenic route to get here, it’s those little diversions that keep things interesting.

All in all, I can’t say that I regret a thing, when I look back and think about what I know now.

Sophie Childs is a happily married mother of five. Her first novel, Behind the Scenes, is due to be released by So Vain Books early in 2015. It combines Sophie’s love of movies with her experiences working in offices to tell an intricate tale of life behind the scenes in the glamorous world of film making. She’s now hard at work on her second novel.

An Oxford Modern History graduate, Sophie set up her own publishing company, Fey Publishing, which she ran for five years before selling it as a going concern in 2013 to focus on her writing. She is the editor of Idol Musings and Idol Meanderings, anthologies based on an online writing competition and a freelance writer who’ll write anything you need, with children’s stories, memoirs, novels from all types of genre and web copy all forming part of her regular work.

After spending five years living in New Zealand, she s now comfortably settled in the beautiful Welsh valleys, where she enjoys exploring the local nature reserves and castles with her children and dog.
